Into The Black

Artwork Description

“I had no control” says Michael as he remembers where this piece came from.

“I stepped into the painting and stepped out of it.

And I was terrified because it was a big canvas.

I had no plan. I had no schema. And I just let go. Free form. And I thought to myself, ‘if there is anything on the other side of this when I come down tomorrow, I will scratch it out.

It’s ‘my kids could do that’.

This is figurative.

I can see grasses and bushes.

Animals.

People.

And they merge into each other.

This piece is my most articulate.

It’s met with the most resistance.

Some people just go ‘WOW’ and I don't know what that wow means, and other people say ‘oh that's horrible’ and they are the ones I am interested in.

And people who get a scared reaction to this one are welcome to use the diagnosis of ‘fear syndrome’ when they are next to their psychiatrist,” says Michael with a laugh!

Michael sees this one as black and white, and that is why he has called it “Into the Black”. When I tell him that it is purple he says to me “You should get your eyes checked!” and laughs again.
