A Double Reflection

Michael has always been fascinated by history.
He has a particular interest in the World Wars.
Michael says “I've watched a lot of documentaries about WWI. The brutality and disintegration. This piece has elements of the mashed bodies of the participants of war. The lack of morals, evident. It is like we are looking across the water and the people are silent.
There is a plane in the sky. Like a WWI fighter.
These are bodies emerging from the Somme, in France.
There is no time for mourning.
Barely time to bury the dead.
And the Australian Aborginal involvement was not even acknowledged, but they are going into the soil as well as anyone.
Australia was the only country that did not have conscription in WWI, which meant every single person who went to war were volunteers, which is where the ANZAC legend has come from. Prime Minister Billy Hughes tried twice to implement conscription with referendums. Both were rejected. The Australian public were asked to vote on conscription during the Somme while the news of its massive casualties were fresh. ”
This artwork can then be flipped and looked from the other side, creating a double reflection.
“The same story can be seen both ways with this artwork” Michael says. “A reflection of the mud in the mud. Blood spilled and seeping into the soil. The seeds of the ANZAC legend laid.”
