“It's a boat with a sloppy hand signal.
The closest thing I got to being on a boat was a photograph of one for a Rolex ad that I put in a magazine.
I've had no experiences of boats except looking at photos of them. This is inspried by Australia 2 (From the Sydney to Hobart yacht race)
It's a boat. What else does it need to say?”
This pieces is a good metaphor for Michael's practice.
He feels like a fake painting boats he's never been on, and having a retrospective about painting while he's never had a painting practice before.
His art practice is all encompassing of his creative life; music, art direction, creative directing, advertising, painting. Thus, this is not a retrospective of painting, it's a retrospective of the art he has made in his life (culminating in painting) with different mediums.
