Artwork Number 43
The King of Love
Artwork Description
Michael is strongly influenced by his Catholic upbringing.
Jesus wore a crown of thorns. It was meant to be a form of torture and humiliation.
On the day of his crucifixion, Jesus was stripped of all his clothing bar a loin cloth. To increase his humiliation and to mock his supposed claim of being “king of the Jews”, he was given a crown made from local thorn bushes twisted into a circlet for his head.
Michael shares, “You can't make yourself a king. You can only act like a king. You can't make yourself a king by declaring it, you can only make yourself a king by acting like a king. Jesus’s actions were that of love and that means he was the King of Love.”
“But it is also to do with agony. Some people suffer from morning to night. A mental suffering. It is self-inflicted. I have experienced it. It can feel like a crown of thorns on your head and in your mind. It is what brings me to the canvas, often.”
My father, Michael, is the King of Love to me.
